Do you suffer from permanent headache and your teeth are hypersensitive? Do you feel that each night your teeth are worn more and more, and brushing your teeth causes bleeding? Is your jaw constantly sore? Does your partner complain about loud and persistent grinding of your teeth? Do you feel that you are almost "eating" your teeth? It is likely that you suffer from bruxism - a disease that symptoms appear only when you… sleep. In La Dentista, we also treat bruxism. Please find out what bruxism is and how we can help you to overcome it.
Bruxism - symptoms
Bruxism is a disease characterized by pathological and uncontrolled teeth grinding or clenching, especially during sleep. People who lead a stressful, nervous lifestyle are particularly exposed to the development of bruxism. Bruxism can lead among others to:
- Apparent abrasion of the tooth surface, which significantly affects the shape of the teeth,
- Tooth loosening, enamel cracking, which in consequence leads to tooth loss,
- Development of inflammation in the temporomandibular joints, as well as around teeth,
- Ear, neck, head, back and shoulder pain - especially when bruxism is not treated.
The sooner we react to the symptoms of bruxism, the easier it will be to cure the disease and its effects. As part of the treatment and mitigation of bruxism effects, we apply splint therapy, using relaxation, stabilization and reposition splints.
Treatment of bruxism requires not only dental consultation, but also the use of splint therapy, which stops the negative effects of grinding and clenching the teeth. The advantages of treating bruxism by using the splint therapy are:
- stopping unintentional clenching and grinding of the teeth, especially while sleeping
- avoiding destruction of the enamel surface
- gaining distinct relaxation of the muscles directly surrounding the jaw and the temporomandibular joint
Splint therapy focuses on eliminating the consequences of bruxism – it enables muscle relaxation, as well as eliminates pain. In splint therapy, unique and customized overlays on the upper teeth are used. The prepared overlay is put on at night, so its use is not bothersome, and it brings a stunning and sensible effect.
It is very difficult to precisely assess the adequate duration of the entire therapy. The duration of splint therapy depends on many factors - especially the time at which the effects begin to appear. The first effects should appear after a week of splint therapy. During this time, the muscles will be significantly relaxed, which will result in a reduction of pain and discomfort.
Diagnosed bruxism is the basis for making a fitted relaxation splint. Only a fitted relaxation splint, made on the basis of an impression from the patient's mouth can guarantee relief. A poorly fitted relaxation splint (this applies, among others, to readily available, poor-quality relaxation splints at low prices) may have an extremely destructive effect on the teeth. Hence, the only noteworthy solution is the implementation of an individually fitted relaxation splint based on the jaw imprint - along with a unique positioning of the teeth.
A relaxation splint is nothing more than a transparent overlay on the upper arch of the teeth, which prevents the upper teeth from rubbing against the lower teeth. In this way, the symptoms of bruxism can be prevented. The use of a relaxation splint additionally reduces the muscle-nervous tension, which significantly mitigate the pain associated with bruxism.
A stabilizing splint is a good treatment for masticatory dysfunction. Its main purpose is to improve the condition and functionality of the temporomandibular joint, which suffered from clenching teeth while sleeping. A properly fitted stabilizing splint is a great solution for the conservative treatment of temporomandibular diseases resulting from muscle tension.
A reposition splint is a type of overlay that should be worn 24 hours a day, except for hygienic procedures. Depending on the patient's needs and intended use, the degree of hardness of such an overlay can be significantly different. Its main purpose is to improve the position of the temporomandibular joint. It is used when the components of the temporomandibular joint are dislocated as a result of bruxism. The use of a reposition brace, also known as an orthopedic brace, gives a good chance to reduce some of the symptoms.
